Alfred H. Andrews first produced globes from the 1860's, after acquiring the Holbrook school apparatus company. Andrews became a prolific globemaker, producing globes ranging from 3 inches to 30 inches, primarily for schools and home education. The present example opens to two flat maps, providing both two and three-dimensional representations of the Earth. A 5-inch hinged globe was illustrated in the A.H. Andrews & Co. Illustrated Catalogue of School Merchandise in 1881.
