Two Mahogany Medicine Chests, English, mid-19th century,

the larger with hinged lid opening to fifteen glass medicine bottles of various sizes, some labelled, the fitted drawer to the base with recessed handle opening to accessories including scales and weights, and glass pestle and mortar, the chest with brass carrying handles to the sides; the smaller with hinged lid opening to a set of six glass medicine bottles, a drawer to the base, keyhole with ivory inlay, a brass carrying handle to the lid;
the larger 9 3/4in x 13in x 8in (25cm x 33cm x 20.5cm)
the smaller 7in x 6in x 4 1/4in (18cm x 15cm x 11cm)

Medicine chests were often equipped with additional equipment for the measuring, preparation, and dispensing of chemical remedies. Cox's Companion published from 1820-1900 lists the standardised list of accessories for medicine chests.
