This composition is after the original currently held in the Royal Collection no. 404599.

Prince Edward of Saxe-Weimar served in the British army during the Crimean War and fought in several battles including the Battle of Alma in September 1854. He later became the Commander-in-Chief of the British forces in Ireland from 1885 until he retired in 1890.
