A monumental pair of silver candlesticks

unmarked, circa 1900, with Goldsmith's Company Assay Office silver analysis test results
In the late 17th century style, the fluted cylindrical columns with gadrooned octagonal knops, on conforming stepped octagonal bases with gadroon bands, both with removable wood bases, height without wood bases 50cm, diameter at base 27cm, weight 72oz. (2)

These candlesticks are pictured at Chilham Castle in the 1950s being used as electric lamps.

John Holroyd-Reece (1897-1969) was educated at Repton. While considering a place at King's College, Cambridge, the First World War began and Holroyd-Reece joined the Egyptian Expeditionary Force. He was a knowledgeable collector of antiques and founded Pegasus Press in 1927 which specialised in books on fine art.
