A monumental Victorian silver covered flagon
Mappin & Webb, London 1900
Of tapering cylindrical form, the domed hinged cover bearing an applied scrolling leaf thumb-piece, the cushion top embossed with foliate decoration and a cast standing Roman figure draped in a toga holding a laurel garland as the finial, the upper rim featuring applied laurel and ribbon decoration, to one side a large leaf-capped scroll handle ornately decorated with a bearded mask, shells, scrolling leaves and beading, the spout opposite cast with cherubs, grapes, lion heads and a satyr to the fore with shell motifs to the base, the expansive sides with applied girdles, the border to the top with panels either side portraying Roman warriors, horses and chariot scenes, plain middle section, the border to the base and domed spreading circular foot intricately embossed in high and low relief with shell, leaf and bead motifs, height 46cm, diameter 24.5cm, weight 104oz.
