A George III mahogany and ebonised banded secretaire bookcase

Circa 1795, inlaid with boxwood stringing, the pair of interlaced astragal glazed doors carved with the Prince of Wales feathers, a central rosette and surmounted by a ribbon tie, enclosing three adjustable shelves, above a twin panelled and oval inlaid secretaire drawer, enclosing eight chequer banded drawers, eight pigeon holes and a central chequer-inlaid door enclosing one drawer, over a pair of panelled and oval inlaid doors, on splayed feet, the upper and lower sections both period, but possibly matched, 121cm wide x 56cm deep x 224cm high, (47 1/2in wide x 22in deep x 88in high)

Footnotes

The pattern for the astragal glazing bars of the upper section on the offered lot is virtually identical to a design for glazed doors illustrated in Thomas Sheraton's 1793 publication, The Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Drawing-Book, Part III, pl. 29, No. 3., and in the modern Dover edition, 1972, New York, p. 68. This design, which features again in the third edition of Sheraton's Drawing-Book published in 1802, also re-appears in The Sheraton Director, arranged by J.M. Bell, 1990, Ware, p. 21.
