This portrait of the Fawcett family children depicts one of Yorkshire's most important textile manufacture and wool merchant families of the time, being highly regarded in the town of Bradford during this period.
Richard Fawcett, the children's father, was known as 'King Richard' to the residents of Bradford due to his involvement in the development of the city through building new factories and creating numerous jobs in the area. The Fawcett family also had a strong attachment to the Church of England, highlighted in this painting by the presence of Bradford Old Parish Church which can be seen in the distance.
A portrait of Richard Fawcett, believed to be painted by the same artist, J. Hunter can today be found in the Cartwright Hall Art Gallery, Bradford.
