after Antonio Canova (Italian, 1757-1822)
probably carved walnut, both raised on rectangular integral plinths, 41cm high and 20.5cm high (2)

Footnotes

The famous lion sculptures at Chatsworth were originally made for the Rezzonico Monument in St. Peters, Rome. In 1823 the sixth Duke of Devonshire commissioned the same lions for Chatsworth House with the sleeping lion carved by Rinaldo Rinaldi and the crouching Lion by Francesco Benaglia.
