A Regency mahogany reading bergere

Circa 1820, with caning, reeded toprail and conforming arm supports, one arm mounted with a detachable swivel-adjustable and hinged ratcheted stand with a book rest, on ring turned tapering front legs and splayed square section rear legs, terminating in brass castors, 65cm wide x 73cm deep x 91cm high, (25 1/2in wide x 28 1/2in deep x 35 1/2in high)

Footnotes

The offered lot is closely comparable to a design for a library reading chair which is illustrated in Ackermann's Regency Furniture and Interiors, with text by P. Agius, 1984, Marlborough, pl. 19, p. 54. It is noted in the text therein, Ibid, that this model of armchair was widely favoured during the early 19th century:

"...for the library, boudoir, and other apartments of the nobility and gentry."

Although the present bergere has a hinged adjustable stand projecting from the top of one arm intended for the purpose of reading or writing, it appears to be missing the fitting for its opposing arm rest. Clearly visible in the aforementioned drawing of the chair is a candlestick surmounting one arm support, or perhaps more accurately a swivel-hinged candle arm enclosing a candlestick. However this is absent from the above example despite there evidently being a brass recess for such a fitting.
