Footnotes

The firm of Johnstone and Jeanes was established in London, circa 1840, and traded from premises at 67 New Bond Street. Prior to that time, Johnstone had been in partnership with Robert Jupe, the latter of whom patented the renowned Capstan extending dining table (widely referred to as 'Jupe patent' tables) in circa 1835, C. Gilbert, Pictorial Dictionary of Marked London Furniture, 1700-1840, 1996, Leeds, p. 35.

The present lot relates to a number of Gillow designs for davenports which are illustrated in the Gillows Estimate Sketch Books for entries therein during the 1820s and 1830s. Included among these is a comparable design for a davenport, which was ordered in 1830 by Ferguson and Co. (the Oxford Street partners of the Gillows firm then) for Thomas Myers. This particular drawing features in S.E. Stuart, Gillows of Lancaster and London, 1730-1840, Vol II, 2008, Woodbridge, pl. 567, p. 31 (ref. 344/102). One further example of a similar Gillows davenport, dating to 1825-1835, which is from Leighton Hall and is stamped: 'GILLOWS.LANCASTER' appears Ibid, pl. 568, p. 32.
