The personification of the four seasons was a common subject matter for many sculptors in the post Renaissance period and the French sculptor Pierre Le Gros the Elder (1629-1714) was one of the numerous sculptors who produced works using this theme. Le Gros's time was largely taken up with decoration of the palace and extensive gardens at Versailles producing works to the designs of designers such as Charles Le Brun whilst also collaborating with other sculptors of the Bâtiments du Roi. Le Gros's term statues of the four seasons are now in the permanent collection of the Louvre
