Provenance:
HMS Broadsword took an active role in the Falklands War of 1982 and was hit by an Argentine missile that failed to explode. She was also involved in the pickup of survivors from the sinking of HMS Coventry.
HMS Broadsword took part in the Falklands War in 1982. On the 25th May the ship was providing air defence support to HMS Coventry when two Argentine Skyhawk's sunk the Coventry and Broadsword was hit by a missile which put a Lynx helicopter out of action when it damaged the helicopter deck. HMS Broadsword subsequently rescued one hundred and seventy crew of the Coventry and shot down one IAI Dagger of FAA Gruppo 6.
Prior to this Broadsword was involved as the command ship during the huge rescue operation for the 1979 Fastnet race that was devastated by a major storm.
HMS Broadsword (F88) was the lead ship and first Batch 1 unit of the Type 22 frigates of the Royal Navy. Built by Yarrow Shipbuilders and launched in 1976, she served with the Royal Navy until 1995 when she was sold to the Brazilian Navy.
