Footnotes
Approximately the size of an Asian elephant, the woolly mammoth was equipped with two distinctive long tusks. The tusks often exhibited a double curve such as the present example, and were used to dig the snow away while feeding. The males may have also used their tusks in combat, perhaps in competition for female mammoths.
Mammoths also had thick hair and fat storage to provide warmth in the harsh conditions.
