A MAORI WHALEBONE CLUB, KOTIATE, NEW ZEALAND, LATE 19TH CENTURY,

the finial carved, most likely without the use of metal tools, with a tiki head, pierced handle with twine loop stringed with four carved whale ivory tapering strips,

Provenance:
According to family records, Angus Braggins was born in Auckland in 1867 and some time later came to Great Britain with this club and married and had two children. One of whom, George, inherited and passed his property to his son Don Braggins (1941-2011) and hence by decent to the present owner.

"Kotiate" literally means 'cut liver' and describes the shape of this club. All Maori short clubs are used as thrusting weapons in close infighting. After a blow to the temple the notches at the side were used, which, by a twist, lifted off the top of a skull. A chief carrying such a weapon would often challenge the opposing chief to single combat. The first to get in three blows won the duel and often the war." (Mead, 1985: cat. 96)
