Footnotes

Gilman Joslin (1804-1886) was originally a maker of mirrors, before taking over the globemaking business of Josiah Loring (1775-1840) in 1839. Joslin's Boston-based firm produced globes of various sizes, and his son William joined in 1874, after which the firm was renamed 'Gilman Joslin & Son'. According the the cartouche, the present globe was compiled from Smith's new English globe. Additions and improvements were provided by engraving firm Annin & Smith, with revisions by G.W. Boynton.
