Footnotes

Provenance
Twinight Collection

Illustrated by Geoffrey Godden, Staffordshire Porcelain (1983), p.563, fig.729. This larger size of bough pot is much rarer than the similarly decorated examples on three feet. A related example is illustrated by C Barry Sheppard, Pinxton Porcelain (1996), p.224, fig.235. The addition of the raised back on the present lot makes it rarer still. The painting may have been done at the Mansfield workshops of William Billingsley. The view and dedication appear to have been taken directly from the frontispiece to 'Twelve Views in the Vicinity of the Metropolis of Scotland' published in 1801, coinciding with production at Mansfield (1799-1802).

Sir James Stirling was Lord Provost in 1790-2, 1794-6 and 1798-1800. He was granted his baronetcy in 1792, coincidentally becoming Baronet Mansfield, of Ayrshire, rather than Nottinghamshire.
