Footnotes

Provenance
Twinight Collection

The present lot was painted shortly after Waterloo when the Duke was at the height of his fame. Around this same time, Thomas Baxter also modelled a small number of portrait medallions, one of which depicted the Duke of Wellington in a similar profile. An example of Baxter's Wellington medallion was sold by Bonhams, 18 October 2005, lot 55B.

Most of these rare Flight, Barr and Barr circular medallions are framed with the same multicoloured jewelling seen on this group of cabinet cups. In order to frame his fine miniature paintings, it is likely that Thomas Baxter also designed the 'jewelled' borders. The footnote to lot 62 in this sale includes a quotation from Baxter's pupil, Solomon Cole, that strongly suggests these jewels were designed and applied under Baxter's direct supervision.
