A Derby plate, circa 1825

Painted in continental style with a busy harbour scene, two figures in animated discussion standing before a statue to the left, probably by William Corden after a London-decorated Nantgarw plate by J Plant, the border with figures within a continuous rural landscape, the shaped rim with dentil gilding, 23.4cm diam, circular Bloor Derby mark printed in red

Footnotes

Provenance
Mitchell Hedges Collection
Twinight Collection

A Nantgarw plate painted with a very similar scene by J Plant at the Sims workshop in London is in the Victoria and Albert Museum and is illustrated by Oliver Fairclough, The London China Trade 1800-1830, ECC Trans., Vol.16., Pt.2,.p.210. The same scene is found on a plate from the Ongley Service, suggesting that identical subjects we in use on that service and the set of which the present lot forms part. The distinctive border is also copied from a London-decorated Nantgarw plate, see the example sold by Bonhams on 3 November 2016, lot 282.
