The Bubble Back design first appeared in Rolex's catalogue in the early 1930s, just as wristwatches were beginning to become the dominant form of timekeeping.
It was during this era that Rolex introduced its first water-tight Oyster case, as well as the self-winding movement with a full rotor. In order to accommodate the new, thicker movement, with a rotor on top, and to maintain the water-tight case, Rolex introduced a domed case back known as the Bubble Back.
