An almost identical lidded measure was discovered in the wreck of the Mary Rose, which sank in 1545, off the coast of Portsmouth. It was found on the main deck and measures 15cm high. It also has the stamped initials 'R' or 'BWE' on the lid, which again appear on items found in the Surgeon's cabin. The letters are probably an ownership mark, or possibly a makers' mark.
Please note the description and estimate for this lot has been changed to: Possibly 16th century, with later elements. Estimate £700-1000
