A rare Henry VIII pewter lidded measure

Circa 1540
The central shallow dome of the 'flat' lid stamped with initials, a plume-shell thumbpiece and raised wedge, waisted-baluster body with incised line decoration, single strap handle, 10cm wide, 14cm deep, 18cm high (3 1/2in wide, 5 1/2in deep, 7in high)

Footnotes

An almost identical lidded measure was discovered in the wreck of the Mary Rose, which sank in 1545, off the coast of Portsmouth. It was found on the main deck and measures 15cm high. It also has the stamped initials 'R' or 'BWE' on the lid, which again appear on items found in the Surgeon's cabin. The letters are probably an ownership mark, or possibly a makers' mark.
