BAT MASTERSON SUBPOENA FOR "DUTCH HENRY" BORN.

Partially printed document signed for Bat Masterson by Charlie Bassett ("W.B. Masterson by Charlie Bassett"), a subpoena for L.E. Deger in the case against Henry Born, 2 pp, 208 x 178 mm, Dodge City, January 23, 1879, centerfold.

"Hearing that the great king of outlaws was in the hands of the Las Animas officers at Trinidad, Sheriff Masterson went up last Wednesday to see what he could see, and, if possible, secure the prisoner and bring him to Ford county to answer for the many 'irregularities' in his conduct toward the owners of horseflesh in this vicinity" (from the Ford County Globe, January 7, 1879). Dutch Henry Born(e) was the most notorious (and successful) horse thief of the Kansas plain. Larry Deger had been the first City Marshal of Dodge City, and Charlie Bassett the first Sheriff of Ford County. Masterson served as undersheriff until he was elected to replace Bassett by just 3 votes over Deger. As had happened many times before, the charming Dutch Henry, who looked little like a thief, ended up being acquitted of the charges despite Masterson's best efforts.
