OAKLEY, ANNIE. 1860-1926.
1. Autograph Postcard Signed ("Annie Oakley Butler"), sending a thank you to a Mrs. Dunlevy in PA, 1 p, 3 1/2 x 5 inches, Dayton, Ohio, Feb 11, 1926 (postmark), to Mrs. Dunlevy, with original autograph transmittal envelope, some toning to postcard, envelope toned and thumbed.
Provenance: purchased Superior Galleries, Los Angeles, CA, May 1992.
2. 6 gelatin silver print photographs of Oakley's hunting dogs, 2 x 3 inches to 4 x 6 inches, the two largest annotated and signed on the verso by FRANK BUTLER with instructions to the Ithaca Gun Company for a custom commemorative shotgun celebrating "Dave," the Butler's favorite hunting dog, some oxidation to images, light thumbing. WITH: another photograph of Oakley aiming a shotgun.
Provenance: photographs delivered by Butler to Bill McGraw, chief engraver of the Ithaca Gun Company; Bill McGraw to Ralph O. Alpen, his successor at the company; sold by Ralph O. Alpen to Jim Earle, West Grove, PA, May 16, 1984.
Butler's notes to the engraver reveal the care he took in commissioning a special rifle for Oakley: on the back of the photograph with Oakley, rifle and dog, he writes: "Can you put this on one side of lock / It would attract some attention / F.E. Butler." On the other he writes, "This is the position for a bird dog But it is not our dog Dave / You might use this for a pose but put the black spots on to look like Dave / Frank G. Butler." The third note in Butler's hand reads: "Engraver may get head from this."
