BUFFALO BILL AND THE MCCANLES AFFAIR.
McCREIGHT, M.I., photographer. 1865-1958. Col. Cody discussing the "McCandles [sic] Affair" with McCandles— Du Bois PA 'O8. Mammoth gelatin silver print of Buffalo Bill in an automobile, 12 x 19 3/4 inches laid down to 17 x 25 inch board, 1908, signed and inscribed by the photographer at lower left corner ("M.I. McCreight"), dampstain to lower left mount not affecting image, framed.
In 1908 Buffalo Bill visited Major Israel McCreight in Du Bois, PA. Monroe McCandles, the son of David McCanles, was also a houseguest, and shared with Buffalo Bill his eyewitness account of the killing of his father by Wild Bill Hickok that countered the popular story of Hickok single-handedly fending off a gang of 9. McCanles argued that in fact, Hickok had staged a cowardly ambush, a story that Cody had not heard before and which he vowed to include in his upcoming autobiography.
