THE VILLARD "GOLD SPIKE" EXCURSION.

HAYES, F. JAY, photographer. Last Spike Pavillion. Imperial albumen print photo, 7 x 10 inches laid down to larger board, 1883, photographer's imprint to lower left mount ("F. Jay Haynes, / Photo, Fargo"), stain at upper left corner, pinholes at upper and lower center.

This image is from a series of photographs taken on September 8, 1883 at the ceremony for the placement of the final "golden" spike connecting the full length of the Northern Pacific Rail Road. Former President Ulysses S. Grant was present, as was president of the railway Henry Villard, who drove in the final spike. The ceremony actually took place near Gold Creek in Powell County, Montana. The photographer must have traveled from Fargo to take the pictures.
