PORTRAIT OF JESSE JAMES.

Albumen print cabinet card portrait, 5 ½ x 4 inches laid down to 6 ½ x 4 ¼ card, with photographer's imprint ("Taylor Copying House / St. Louis") to lower mount and verso, image. additionally printed on the mount: "I hereby certify that the above is the only late Photograph of my deceased husband, taken before death. Mrs. Jesse W. James," and on reverse, additionally inscribed at upper margin, minor toning and thumbing, abrasion at lower left corner of image.
Provenance: Sold USA, March 10, 2005.

Inscription on the verso reads: "Presented to Mrs. James W. Varble by Mrs. Jesse James Sr. in the year 1882." "Sr" has been added in blue pen over an erasure of what was likely "Jr." Inscription spurious, as the first Mrs. James W. Varble died in 1880, and he did not remarry until 1883.
