CALAMITY JANE CABINET CARD.

CANNARY, MARTHA JANE. 1852-1903. Albumen print cabinet card full-length portrait, 5 1/2 x 4 inches laid down to 6 1/2 x 4 1/4 inch board, c.1890, with photographer's imprint to lower mount ("C.E. Finn / Livingston, Mont"), loss to lower left corner of mount, some thumbsoiling to lower right, stains to verso.
Provenance: purchased Dallas, 1987, vendor unrecorded.

Martha "Calamity Jane" Cannary was a frontierswoman, sharpshooter and raconteur who was an acquaintance of Wild Bill Hickok and later in life appeared in Buffalo Bill's Wild West show. This photograph of her in buckskin trousers with a Colt revolver on her hip and a Sharps rifle in her hand dates from around 1890, which is the only verified year C.E. Finn's Livingston Studio was open for business.
