Provenance
Acquired at the Official London 2012 Auction approved by the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games, 4 July 2012.

The present lot is the torch carried by David Beckham on the 18th May 2012, which he used to start the London 2012 Torch Relay by lighting the Olympic cauldron at Culdrose naval airbase in Cornwall.

The torch relay took place over 70 days, and included approximately 8,000 torchbearers across Britain and Ireland. The relay culminated with the iconic Opening Ceremony of London 2012 Olympics on the 27th July 2012.

David Beckham had played an important role in the London 2005 bid to host the 2012 Olympics, and seven years later he attended the handover ceremony of the Olympic flame in Athens as part of the official UK delegation. Following the handover ceremony, the flame was flown to the UK on a specially chartered flight (BA Flight 2012). With the flame occupying seat 1A, the passengers included Beckham, Anne, Princess Royal, Sebastian Coe and the Mayor of London.

The torch is composed of four sheets of lightweight, perforated aluminium, weighing approximately 800 grams overall. The design provided added safety and comfort for the torchbearers, and was awarded the 2012 Design of the Year by the Design Museum, London.
