Footnotes
The original oil portrait by William Aikman (1682-1731) was exhibited in the Art Treasures Exhibition at the British Portrait Gallery in Manchester in 1857 (cat. 278, loaned by Lord Lyttelton).
Of all the most famous 18th century landscapes, George Lyttelton's Park at Hagley was celebrated in its day by some of the era's most enlightened minds and James Thomson's first visit inspired his poem, 'The Seasons'. Lyttelton was a patron of Thomson, who is also best known for his poem, 'The Castle of Indolence', and for the lyrics of 'Rule, Britannia!'.
