Mounir Fatmi est né à Tanger, Maroc en 1970. Il suit ses études d'art plastique à Casablanca jusqu'en 1989 et les poursuit jusqu'en 1991 à Rome, Italie. Actuellement, il vit et travaille à Paris, France.

Les installations, sculptures, vidéos, photographies, peintures et dessins de Mounir Fatmi se jouent des conventions. Guidé par une insolence caustique, il questionne, provoque et s'attaque aux notions de pouvoir et aux extrémismes en tous genre, tant en matière d'art, de religion ou de politique, mais aussi à leurs outils ; l'architecture et les médias. Les matériaux utilisés sont simples, parfois même obsolètes (comme la cassette VHS ou le câble coaxial), et Mounir Fatmi ne les choisit jamais par hasard.

Les œuvres de Mounir Fatmi ont été exposées dans de nombreux musées à travers le monde et notamment au Migros Museum für Gegenwarskunst de Zurich en Suisse, au Museum Kunst Palast de Düsseldorf en Allemagne, au Centre Georges Pompidou à Paris, et au Mori Art Museum à Tokyo.

« Propagande » est une série de peintures en noir et blanc, initiée en 2012, et caractérisée par la répétition des alignements de cassettes VHS.
Support d'enregistrement grand public qui fut la norme dans les années 80 et 90, la cassette VHS est également un outil récurrent des œuvres de Mounir Fatmi, présente dans ses peintures, sculptures et installations.



Mounir Fatmi was born in Tangier, Morocco in 1970. He studied plastic art in Casablanca until 1989 and continued until 1991 in Rome, Italy. He currently lives and works in Paris, France.

« Propaganda » is a series of black & white paintings initiated in 2012, the medium on which they are painted being rows of VHS tapes. A means for recording images that was the norm in the 1980s and 1990s and a widely used commercial format, the VHS tape is also a recurrent material in Mounir Fatmi's work, used in paintings, sculptures or installations.

All of these pieces question the place of communication and media exposure in our contemporary societies and try to define the relation contemporary art has to images and their power – taking inspiration, among other things, from the philosophical notions developed by Guy Debord and from artistic movements such as minimalism and pop art that placed the image or its disappearance at the heart of their preoccupations. In particular, this series of paintings explores the relations between communication and propaganda and observes how mass communication elaborated its techniques since the popularization of video recording and the fact it was able to enter millions of households and reach the consciences of a great number of viewers. It observes the forms of social organizations that resulted from that, and their relation to individuals or their effect on them.
