Captured in dazzling colours and sculptural, clearly delineated forms in the vein of Matisse's opulent interiors, a young middle-class couple relaxing under a canopy of vines is invested with a monumental quality, seeking to provoke the viewer's emotional response. In the second half of the 1930s, Diamantopoulos embarked on an inspiring and highly personal style dominated by the presence of the human form, retaining unimpaired his keen interest in dynamic form and bold colour. Turning to the storehouse of Greek tradition to rediscover overlooked and latent qualities, and drawing from such diverse 20th century avant-garde sources as fauvism, cubism, surrealism, expressionism and neo-figurative trends, Diamantopoulos fused his sources to create a world of pure forms and immediate sensations that captured the hearts and minds of the succeeding generations of Greek artists. As noted by Alekos Fassianos, "Diamantopoulos is a source of life for contemporary Greek painting."1
