A great example of the artist's German period—as indicated by its signature in Latin characters (Bolanachi)—Après la tempête showcases virtuoso brushwork, immediacy of execution, sense of space, harmony of proportion and unity of effect. His suggestion of the atmosphere, the low horizon that gives full value to the spaciousness of the sweeping sky, and the trenchant design are reminiscent of the great 17th c. Dutch seascape painters. Moreover, the human figures seem fully absorbed by the natural environment, becoming an integral part of the whole in a romantic notion of art echoing Claude Lorrain.

Though the influence of the Munich School is evident, Volanakis, who was raised on the island of Crete and had experienced open horizons and the constantly changing sea, could not limit himself to strict academic tenets. Allowing himself to demonstrate a freer exercise of his technical abilities, he captures the struggle of fishermen¹ pushing their boat out to the foamy sea with swift and vigorous brushstrokes that match the fury of the breaking waves. The marine scene is full of action, conveying the artist's concern with movement and the evanescent effects of nature, while the seascape is perceived as a complex entity with unlimited expressive potential (compare Towards the shore, c. 1875, National Gallery, Athens). Scintillating highlights and bold patches of vivid colour that break through the dullness and coolness of the day, come together to create a moving picture of spontaneity and immediacy in the vein of his impressionist Circus (1876) at the National Gallery in Athens.

¹ Volanakis focused with great love on everyday life on the seacoast and the hard toil of fishermen, showing genuine interest in the ordinary activities of people who lived and worked by the sea, a social concern that links him to Gustave Courbet and the Barbizon artists.

La suggestion de l'atmosphère, l'horizon bas qui valorise pleinement le vaste espace du ciel balayé de nuages et le trait incisif rappellent les peintres de marine hollandais du 17ème siècle. En outre, les personnages humains semblent totalement absorbés par l'environnement naturel, se fondant dans l'ensemble dans une vision romantique de l'art faisant écho à Claude Lorrain.

Bien que l'influence de l'École de Munich soit évidente, Volanakis, qui a été élevé en Crête et a donc connu de vastes horizons et une mer sans cesse changeante, n'a pas pu s'en tenir à des principes strictement académiques. S'autorisant un exercice plus libre de ses capacités techniques, il saisit sur le vif la lutte des pêcheurs poussant leur bateau hors des flots pleins d'écume, avec des traits rapides et vigoureux qui font écho à la fureur des vagues déferlantes. La scène marine est pleine d'action, reflétant la passion de l'artiste pour le mouvement et les effets évanescents de la nature, tandis que le paysage marin est perçu comme une entité complexe au potentiel expressif illimité (comparer avec Towards the shore, vers 1875, Galerie nationale, Athènes). Des reflets scintillants et des taches audacieuses de couleur vive qui rompent avec la tristesse et la froideur du jour, s'associent pour créer une image mouvante de spontanéité et d'immédiateté dans la veine de son Circus impressionniste (1876) exposé à la Galerie nationale d'Athènes.
