In his signature subjects drawn from Athens, Tetsis was primarily interested in the way light is consumed by the surfaces of the urban volume. Here, the porous walls of an Athenian house absorb the afternoon light and are soaked in it, allowing the artist a mood of contemplative serenity. The soaring, rhythmic architecture of windows, shutters and balcony rails emphasizes the picture's still atmosphere and imparts a sense of monumentality and timelessness, while the monochromatic tones of ochre and green enhance the effect of unity. Lines, curves, shimmering, tilting planes, and light and dark forms compose a familiar image of Athens' urban landscape but they can also be read as a nearly abstract sum total of brilliant shapes, echoing a post-impressionist formal vocabulary.
