In this emblematic, powdered-texture painting executed during the late 1950's in Paris, Nonda, Greek painter of the Charpentier's Ecole de Paris, depicts a ship most likely inspired by his frequent visits to the Musee de la Marine in Paris. This unique application of pigments dominates a significant part of his ouevre. As cited by art critic Athina Schina in an exhibtion catalog from 2003," Nonda continued to paint as though he were executing frescos." This painting is a testament to this signature style as well as a tribute to his Philhellenic reality. The small "Bateau" sits in the forefront of the canvas on a magnificent and opulent red sea.
