A THANGKA OF GREEN TARA AS SAMAYA YOGINI
TIBET, 19TH CENTURY
A form of Green Tara, Samaya Yogini has a semi-wrathful/semi-peaceful appearance. She is surrounded by twenty other forms of Tara. Paintings like the present example are created in Tibet for Nepalese patrons, who often add inscriptions to the bottom register at a later date. A closely related composition is in the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology (HAR 36371).
Provenance
Private European Collection assembled in the 1960s and 1970s
