A THANGKA OF TSONGKHAPA EMANATING FROM THE HEART OF MAITREYA
EASTERN TIBET, EARLY 20TH CENTURY

At the center of the composition, the founding triad of the Gelug Order - Tsongkhapa (1357-1419) and his two disciples Gyaltsap Dharma Rinchen (1364-1432) and Kedrup Geleg Pal Zangpo (1385-1438) - emerges from the heart of Maitreya on a billowing cloud. Below them, buffalo-head Yama Dharmaraja is flanked by Magzor Gyalmo with her mule on the left, and Dorje Shugden riding a snow lion on the right. Compare with a closely related composition in the Shelley and Donald Rubin Collection (HAR 18).

Provenance
Private European Collection assembled in the 1960s and 1970s
