TWO THANGKAS FROM AN AVADANAKALPALATA SET
TIBET, 18TH/19TH CENTURY
Each of these two paintings depicts Shakyamuni Buddha encircled by an array of scenes from the 11th-century Avadanakalpata by the Kashmiri poet Kshemendra. The painting with three cartouches contains story no.19, The Past Lives of Shariputra, no.20, Shronakotikarna Learns the Power of Karma, and no.21, Amrapali and the King. The other painting houses four stories, corresponding to no.88, The Son of Hastishayyati, no.89, The Liberation of Dharmaruchi, no.90, Dhanika's Offerings, and no.91, The Eloquence of King Shibi. For a translation of each story contained within these thangkas, see Black (trans.), Leaves of the Heaven Tree, Berkeley, 1997. Two other related Avadana thangkas were sold at Sotheby's New York, 24 March 2011, lot 83, and 15 March 2017, lot 241.
