A BRASS STUPA
TIBET, CIRCA 12TH CENTURY

A slightly flared drum emerges from two bands of plump lotus petals. The drum is topped by a harmika, thirteen tapering umbrellas, and a surmounting lotus-bud rising from a lotus-parasol. This early Tibetan stupa-form is associated with the Kadampa order, which was introduced to Tibet in the 11th century. Compare with a larger example published in Béguin, Dieux et demons de l'Himalaya, Paris, 1977, p.274, no.352, and one in the Museum der Kulturen, Basel (Essen & Thingo, Die Götter des Himalaya, Vol.II, Munich, 1989, p.32, no.II-48). Also see similar examples sold at Sotheby's, London, 31 May 2011, lot 79; Christie's, New York, 13 September 2011, lot 335; and Bonhams, Hong Kong, April 21, lot 18.
