A THANKGA OF SHAKYAMUNI AND THE SIXTEEN ARHATS
TIBET, 19TH/EARLY 20TH CENTURY
Sitting in front of a golden mandorla below a cluster of pink peony blooms, Shakyamuni is surrounded by the sixteen arhats, four in each corner. The sixteen arhats are the original followers of the historical Buddha, easily recognizable by their attributes and hand gestures. Immediately below, Sariputra and Maudgalyayana stand on either side of Buddha's throne. They are joined by the stout-bodied Hvashang and Dharmatala with his companion tiger, attendants to the sixteen arhats. Within the lower register, Green Tara appears at the center, flanked by the four guardian kings. See an earlier painting of the same subject preserved at the Freer Gallery of Art, Washington D.C.(HAR 69604).
