A THANGKA OF SHAKYAMUNI BUDDHA
TIBET, 19TH/EARLY 20TH CENTURY

In front of an elaborate mandorla of mythical creatures, Shakyamuni Buddha sits on a gold-outlined lotus throne attended by standing Manjushri and Vajrapani on each side. In front of the densely patterned offering table, Shadakshari is flanked by Vajrasattva and Vajravidarana. At the top center, the Thirteenth Dalai Lama appears at the tip of the mandorla, holding a dharma wheel and a lotus. To his left, Amitabha Buddha is accompanied by Avalokiteshvara and Vajrapani, with Padmasambhava, Shanti Rakshita, and Trisong Detsen forming a triad on the opposite side.
