A RARE BRONZE ARROW VASE, TOUHU

Yuan Dynasty
Cast with a spreading foot supporting a bulbous body surmounted by a long tubular neck flanked by a pair of lug handles, separated into tiers decorated with stylised pendent lappets, tumbling sea waves and key-fret patterns. 22.2cm (8 3/4in) high, 866g.

The wave pattern on the present vase is typical in the Yuan dynasty. Compare with a bronze vase, excavated from a shipwreck off the coast of Sinan, South Korea, decorated with a similar wave pattern, which is illustrated by the National Museum of Korea, Discoveries From The Sinan Shipwreck, Seoul, 2016, p.30.

壺口方唇，兩側鑄小貫耳，上飾蕉葉紋，壺頸下段飾水波紋，肩部光素，扁圓鼓腹，其上飾回紋錦地，圈足外撇，足圈飾回紋錦地一周。

此壺小巧可愛，應是置於桌面之器。此器紋飾不同於常見鏨刻紋飾，而是一體鑄造而成，線條清晰流暢，鑄工一流。所飾水波紋為元代典型裝飾，韓國新安沉船出土數件元代銅壺飾有類似水波紋，見韓國國家博物館編，《從新安沈船尋見的寶物》，首爾，2016年，頁30。
