A CURTIS STUDIOS LOS ANGELES SAMPLE BOOK.
CURTIS, EDWARD S. 1868-1952. 102 gelatin silver print photographs from the Curtis North American Indian series, most 6 x 8 inches, c.1924, all laid down to black album leaves (now loose and in a 3-ring binder), most images identified in white pencil at the lower margin, the preponderance of images signed and/or numbered in the negative, many leaves with mimeographed order form on the verso, some filled out to indicate the number and size of prints ordered and a very few dated January to November, 1924, minor discoloration to preliminary prints.
Provenance: Purchased by Dr. Billy Utley from Manford "Mag" Magnuson.
A FASCINATING LOOK AT THE CURTIS STUDIO BUSINESS MODEL. This remarkable album of gelatin silver prints served as the studio sales catalog for the Curtis Indian prints. Originally set out on a table in the Reception Room of the Curtis Studio at the Biltmore Hotel, the album features 102 of Curtis's most popular and compelling images. Present here are all the best sellers: "The Vanishing American," "Canyon de Chelley," "At the Well of Old Acoma," "Signal Fire to Mountain God," and many more. The mimeographed order form on the back of many lots tells us how the studio managed its business. Drawn in a grid, the page features a place for the negative number and title, and then below, divided by size (11 x 14 and 8 x 10 inches), customers can order Orotones or $3 Indians and choose a variety of finishes to their image (oil or pastel, etc.). The order forms that feature dates only show entries from 1924, though this may have been used both before and after that time.
