CURTIS CYANOTYPES FROM VOLUME IX OF THE NORTH AMERICAN INDIAN.
23 cyanotypes with images of Quinault and Tahola tribe members, including portraits, still lifes, and photographs made en plein air of fishing and boating, many of which are related to or variants of published images, the images measuring about 8 x 6 inches (203 x 152 mm), all numbered in grease pencil on reverse and a few additionally annotated "Quinault," "Shoalwater Bay," or the picture's title, c.1912.
Provenance: Purchased by Dr. Billy Utley from Manford "Mag" Magnuson.
In his introduction to volume IX, Curtis remarks on the dependence of the tribes of the Pacific Northwest on the sea, and their subsequent skills in building and handling watercrafts. This collection of cyanotypes captures that expertise with images of natives canoeing, fishing with nets, and hunting clams. The present lot also includes portraits of Sam Millet, Mrs. Mattie Howeather, and Mrs. Wilcox.
