BOOK ILLUSTRATED WITH CURTIS PHOTOGRAPHS.

RYAN, MARAH ELLIS. 1860-1934. The Flute of the Gods. New York: F.W. Stokes, [1909].
8vo. Original decorated brown cloth with photographic onlay to upper cover. Featuring photographic illustrations by Curtis throughout. Small dampstain to upper margin of 143-155, shelfwear.

First trade edition. Ryan was an author, actress and activist who went to live with the Hopi in 1909, observing their rituals and way of life. She turned this experience into the present novel, which follows the tribes of the southwest and their interaction with Spanish missionaries. After reading Ryan's manuscript, Curtis agreed to provide the novel's illustrations, traveling to Arizona and New Mexico for the shoot. Some of his most famous images arose out of this project, including "Signal Fire to Mountain God."
