ATTRIBUTED TO TIFFANY STUDIOS.
Jicarilla Chief. 1900.
Modeled by Alfred Lenz (1872-1926) after Curtis portrait of Vash Gon.
Patinated bronze on original oak frame, inscribed "Modeled by Alfred Lenz after Curtis Photograph / copyright 1900" at lower left.
20 x 10 inches; 26 x 15 inches (framed).
Provenance: Purchased by Dr. Billy Utley from Manford "Mag" Magnuson.
Correspondence among the Curtis Studio papers helps identify this work as coming from the Tiffany Studios. In an undated letter (but before 1917, as the studio is still located in Seattle), a copy of which is present with this lot, the studio suggests to a "Faculty Advisor, Senior Class," that either a copy of "The Vanishing Race" or "a Tiffany Bronze of the Jicarilla Chief" would make an excellent senior class gift to the school. Present also is a copy of "Molten Shots," likely a Curtis Studio publication that features an image of the piece described as "a Tiffany Bronze of which is in the National Palace of every civilized country in the world."
