8vo. Illustrated with maps, sketches and photographs. Original pictorial red cloth. Spotting throughout, shelfwear.
Provenance: Purchased by Dr. Billy Utley from Manford "Mag" Magnuson.
PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED on the f.f.e. by the author to Edward S. Curtis, "E.S. Curtis with the author's kind regards," and additionally signed by Curtis.
Haddon was an influential British ethnologist who effectively founded the modern school of anthropology. His most important field work was executed in the Torres Islands, where he worked furiously to save objects and rituals from certain destruction by zealous missionaries. Like Curtis, he used audio and visual recording techniques to preserve ceremonial songs and dances.
