Footnotes

RARE series of fine chromolithographed views from William Simpson's India Ancient and Modern (1867). Celebrated for his view of the Crimean War, Simpson arrived in India in 1859, having been commissioned to create a work to rival that of David Roberts' Holy Land. He spent three years travelling through the subcontinent making the watercolours from which the chromolithographs were taken.
