This folio is a historically significant body of work commissioned in celebration of the one-year anniversary of the Indonesian Declaration of Independence in 1945. The works depict various images associated with the nation's struggle towards Independence. Thirty-six of these folios were printed and distributed to various countries who had recognised Indonesia's independence during that period.
The publication page describes this work as 'the first edition of linocuts to be published in the history of Indonesian Art.'
An excerpt from the folio's preface provides an understanding of the motivation behind these commissioned works:
'This album of linocuts is an example of the desire in the Indonesian Youth for self-expression. We have never had the opportunity to study painting and drawing, but through the guidance obtained from books, little though it was, and from chance meetings with foreigners, a way has been found to give expression to what was in our heart.
A young people is now reaching out to humanity and seeking sympathy and appreciation of its struggle for the realisation of its essential human rights among the ranks of the nations of the world.'
