The Yale University collection holds eighty-six oil paintings by the Chinese artist Lamqua, depicting people with large tumours or other major medical deformities. These works were commissioned by Peter Parker (1804-1888) in the 1830s; a doctor-missionary who travelled to China in 1834 setting up an ophthalmic hospital in Canton the following year. The present works on paper are copied from the originals held in the Yale collection.
