Arctic Exploration: An English porcelain vase, circa 1820-25

Of Warwick vase form, a thick band of oak leaves applied below the rim, richly gilded on a claret ground, supported by four dolphins, the inscription left in the white on the gilt square base; 'FAC-SIMILE OF THE VASE PRESENTED TO CAPTAIN PARRY; BY THE INHABITANTS OF BATH, IN COMMEMORATION OF HIS VOYAGE OF DISCOVERY, TO THE POLAR SEA, MADE IN THE YEARS 1819 & '20.', 17cm high

Footnotes

Sir William Edward Parry (1790-1855) was the first explorer to penetrate the Arctic Archipelago and open the passage through Lancaster Sound. He was the first to winter in the high Arctic deliberately and developed various survival techniques.

This vase would appear to be the earliest known piece of porcelain that celebrates any Arctic exploration and the search for a Northwest Passage. It is based on a larger silver version by Emes & Barnard, retailed by Payne & Son and presented to Captain Parry's brother on 23 January 1822, the absent Captain having been commissioned for Arctic Service once more in December 1821 upon the Fury.
Both versions of the vase are discussed at length by Jonathan Gray in his paper 'Captain Parry and the Northwest Passage', English Ceramic Circle, Trans. Vol. 26, pp.67-79.
