George Isham Parkyns visited America in the mid-1790s and travelled up the east coast. On his journey, he produced a number of engravings based on his sketches of various cities and landmarks. This culminated in 1799 with the publication of his Sketches of Select American Scenery.
A draft letter of recommendation, dated 13 May 1800, from Thomas Jefferson to George Isham Parkyns is held in the US National Archives.
Please note that this work can be more accurately dated to c.1805 as Government House is visible, the building only being completed in 1805. Please see the collection of the British Library for a similar watercolour view by the artist.
